Anthony McCann is an experienced ethnomusicologist, anthropologist, and folklorist. As a freelance journalist and broadcaster he has written for The Irish Times and Hot Press Magazine, and won a SONY award for community radio as a presenter/producer with Strule FM in 2009. Notably, he worked as Assistant Coordinator of the 1999 UNESCO / Smithsonian World Conference on the “Safeguarding of Traditional Culture and Folklore”. He currently holds the position of Research Associate with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
With a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, and M.Phil in Irish studies, Dr. McCann has lectured and carried out research in Universities across America, Ireland, Northern Ireland and England. As passionate as Anthony is about his work in cultural understanding, he is equally if not more passionate about his poetry and his music. His work ranges from the humorous to the more traditional; philosophical to political. All of them are distinctive, with a clear personal voice, and can be tapped into by all who either read his work or listen to him perform.
